Welcome to Fab Yoga!

A little information: - Karen Pancholi During a successful career in real estate sales and development in New York City, something wasn’t right. I kept waking up with a stiff neck and sore back. By the end of every week, I couldn’t get out of bed.

I tried massage, doctors—both Eastern and Western, but it wasn’t until I found yoga that my stress and tension started to melt away.

I began to feel good again. Yoga was an absolute life-saver for me, so it is pure joy to pass this gift onto others. I began as a yoga student in 2003 and have tried numerous classes including Ashtanga, Hatha, Naam, Kundalini, and even Yoga on a swing.

I received my teacher certification in January 2011 and teach public classes (listed on this site), plus classes for teenagers in schools and hot yoga classes at a local studio. I look forward to guiding you on your yoga path.

History of Yoga

Summary Yoga is probably the oldest defined practice of self development. It originally came from India it dates back over five thousand years ago. The Indian sage Pantajali, in his Yoga sutras defines yoga as the control of activities of ones minds. Yoga is founded on the belief of the progress of self awareness. Through the practice of yoga an individual can gain information about physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being. In the course of knowledge and practice of yoga the awareness encourages the individual to adjust and changes the aspects of their nature and become more aware of your attuned and life. The methods of yoga includes ethical disciplines, physical postures, breathing control and as well as meditation. As defined by Patanjali, classical yoga has an eight stages process of spiritual development known as the ‘eight limbs of yoga”. Yoga is not a series of consecutive steps, but a continuous and changing process that helps to clear away the mental obscurities that prevent us from seeing clearly. The Sanskrit names for the eight limbs of yoga are:

YAMA attitudes towards other people and our world.

NIYAM attitudes about ourselves.

PRANAYAMA practice of using/controlling the breath.

PRATYAHARA bridge between the outward yoga techniques, and the more subtle, inner yoga practices.

DHARANA use and self-control of our senses.

DHYANA capability to direct the mind.

SAMADHI capability to interact with the object of our concentration.

consectetuer incorporation within the object of our concentration.

Out of the eight limbs only two are specific practices to be consciously done with an object in the mind. All the others evolve as the results of the practices and the changes that make our lives.

Customer Testimonials

Marie-Anne Fischer, Chobham, Surrey "Of all the yoga classes I have ever attended, of which there have been several all around the world, Karen's classes certainly stand out as amongst the best. Karen's warmth, gentle and friendly approach allow Karen to lead her classes in a relaxed and sympathetic way. The fact that Karen's classes are local would certainly not be my only consideration in attending her classes and would be prepared to travel some distance to attend - that's I think how good they are."

I haven't done yoga before, is there a beginner's class? All classes are made up of a mixture of people with mixed Yoga abilities. This way every beginner gets a chance to learn and move towards deeper and more advanced postures. The progress you make is personal to you. In the class everyone does the same postures but the extent to which you take the posture depends on your personal physical ability. As your body moves further you will be able to take the stretches further.

What should I wear? It is best to wear loose clothing. Towards the end of the Class there is always a relaxation period so bring a blanket and a pair of socks to wear as you relax and your body cools down.

I am not very flexible, does that matter? No, not at all. People attend classes to become more flexible, not because they already are.

What should I bring? I would recommend that you invest in a yoga mat, as most venues have wooden floors.

I'm not very fit and overweight - is yoga for me? The yoga taught is very traditional. Karuna yoga concentrates on precision. You do not have to be “fit” to build a Yoga practice. After attending some classes everyone finds that postures become easier. The body starts to become supple and muscles begin to gain strength. Size of the person has no bearing on being able to do yoga, neither does your age or sex!

Should I start in a beginners class? Not necessarily. My classes are of mixed abilities so people are inspired to progress.

Will I lose weight if I do yoga? Many people do. As we begin to feel better and digestion improves there may be less desire to eat large quantities of food. The quality of what we eat may also change.

I am on medication, does that matter? Please ensure you have your doctors approval and you and let your teacher know what medication you are taking.

What are the benefits in pregnancy? If you have already been practising yoga, then becoming pregnant is no reason to stop..quite the opposite in fact. There are certain postures that would not be suitable for your condition, but there are others that are invaluable for keeping limbs and joints supple and helping to prepare for the birth. You can take gentle exercise followed by relaxation or meditation right through to the last few weeks.
